Letting in the Light is a collaboration between Liverpool Book Art, Printmaking Today, and the Society of Wood Engravers, in partnership with Kirkby Gallery.
The participating artists including my artist’s bookwork – Birds of Passage, have used all forms of printmaking and bookmaking, and have been invited to consider the theme “Letting in the Light”, interpreting it in their individual ways. Relief printmaking techniques, such as wood engraving, are subtractive: every mark is white, you are letting in the light. Wood engravers have to think like photographers: “Where is the light source, where is the light falling?” The exhibition will run in parallel with the Society of Wood Engravers 87th Annual Touring Exhibition, with the two displays complementing each other, and encouraging visitors to make connections between the artists and techniques.
