DROPSHOP curated by PHILLIPS

Expertly printed by British publisher JI Editions, Dropshop curated by Phillips is proud to release Between the Garden Lines, a vibrant series of three intricately crafted and richly textured screenprints by the London-based multi-disciplinary artist Hormazd Narielwalla. Narielwalla works across artistic disciplines including printmaking, sculpture and artist’s books, but he is best known for his intricate paper collages and assemblages, which find inspiration from the surfaces of antique, vintage and bespoke tailoring patterns. The prints weave together deconstructed decorative elements from embroidery and early 20th century French sewing pattern drafts, with Narielwalla likening the intricate line work to the experience of looking at a garden through a spider’s web. In the natural wonder of dense spider silk lies order, industry, and careful construction. The decorative structural elements in the compositions allude to the man-made elements of garden design, such as fountains and follies, that elicit surprise and delight.

Between the Garden Lines marks the artist’s complete embrace of color and first foray into printmaking, transforming the black line synonymous with sewing patterns into a joyous and vibrant new visual language. Printing these graphic lines in enamel inks further emphasizes them on the paper surface, creating a subtle shine and surface texture that creates depth in the picture plane.  Building upon the incorporation of the codified language of historic dress patterns at the core of his practice, Narielwalla illuminates that ‘they convey a powerful sense of materiality and time… refracted through a modernist grid of lines, points and planes to re-present their meanings to us’.
